I’m Gonna Rise

mp3

You were soft and mean, 25, I was seventeen,
and I didn’t know what I was doing.
I lost my soul, in Jameson and Rock & Roll.
That was the last thing I remember.

By the wrist up on your razor tongue
The words you hung up on the moonlight
Ever following your shooting star
Your flower car, my train wreck

A flower car follows a hearse to a burial service. A high school friend who always wrote better songs than mine had used the term in the line “follow the flower car into the sun”, which stuck with me for obvious reasons

Yeah, it was one of those, you come by drunk, take off your clothes
You wanna ask me what I remember.
In morning light all your appeals, are synonyms for spinning wheels,
And I’d be better off without you.

You hang like a pocket watch, you cut like a scythe,
Oh how far we fall: you were an angel in another life.
You got the wrong guy, honey, I’m gonna rise, I’m not your trophy hunting
