Love of May

my car was freezing on
the february morning
i figured out that you would not be mine.
i miss my cigarettes, i wish for something better,
i know that things like these can take some time.
one year gone by, and even still i find -
your eyes can knock
me down.
though i play it cool, standing next to you,
i'm ten feet off the ground.
i fight through a
tear to see you go,
i painted angels on the interstate
to help you find your way.
in the road - another turn,
i've been laughing at the things i've learned,
what i did not discern.
i hear san diego is like
a dream in every season.
i'll leave my overcoat behind...
i shuffle sideways to the subtle taste of leaving.
i know i barely cross your mind.
the love of may will never
make through this winter.
i felt i could not carry on
i make allusions to the travel in my veins -
that's how i say that i'm long gone...
